Welcome!
My name is Rachel and I’m a relief printmaker focusing on linocuts. Linocuts are a commonly misunderstood art with roots in the 15th century invention of the printing press. These prints are hand drawn and painstakingly carved onto blocks, then inked and printed with the pressure of a printing press that my husband begrudgingly allows to live in our living room. In the case of reduction linocuts, the block is then carved again, inked in a new color and printed again and again until the block is destroyed and layer upon layer, the image is complete. Every print from my studio is hand crafted, unique and never made from technology.
I began printmaking in college. For seven years I printed single layer black and white linocuts. Then in 2017 I began teaching myself the reduction process. It took a few years and many failed attempts but I now work exclusively in this manner. The 3D process of carving a block with the resulting 2D artwork continues to challenge and fascinate me even now, 15 years into printmaking.
In 2020, I suffered an injury to my wrist. Quick on it’s heels I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease and an immunological condition. For five years, life was a struggle and art a rare escape. Luckily, focusing on health has paid off and in 2026 I returned to my studio practice, gentler and more grateful than before. The time away changed me and impacted my style but as ever my work is inspired by nature and especially those vast landscapes which make us feel small and amazed.
I work from a sunny home studio in Northern California with a huge window overlooking the trees. When I’m not carving I’m spending time with my husband and children, enjoying the Sierra Mountains or diving deep into a book.
