Frequently Asked Questions & Policies
Is this printed from a computer? What is a linocut?
No. Linocuts are original artworks where a image is carved by hand into a block of linoleum. Ink is rolled onto the surface, and the image is transferred to paper using pressure from a printing press (as in the kind they invented in the 15th century, not the kind hooked up to a computer). Each print is a hand crafted original limited edition artwork. Once the prints are sold, I cannot ever reprint them.
Why isn’t there anything in your shop right now?
I open my online shop three or four times a year. This allows me to focus on shipping during shop openings and creating new work between them. Upcoming shop openings for releases of new linocuts are announced via email newsletter and on Instagram. Newsletter subscribers also get first access and sneak peek to all finished works before the shop opening.
What inspires your artwork?
I’m inspired by nature and these moments in daily life when something natural takes your breath away. I love, for instance, the moment when you come over a hill in a car or on a hike and the world unexpectedly opens up into a vast view you weren’t expected. These are the moments that inspire my more the most. I’m also inspired by memories of backpacking trips with my dad, family trips to Europe, interesting phrases in books I’ve read, parenting moments with my children, and a million artists including many printmakers who came before me, such as: William Rice, Walter Phillips, Frances Gearhart, Henri Riviere, Micah Schwaberow and Norma Basset Hall.
Do you accept commissions?
Yes, sometimes. Please reach out via email for more information: rachel@rachelhopkinsart.com
Why are some of your prints signed Rachel Schlothan?
That is my maiden name and I used it to sign my work for many years after marriage until 2026 when I decided it was too confusing having two names.
How do I care for my print? How long will it last?
Linocuts prints can last your lifetime and long after that with proper care. For best preservation, frame with acid free materials preferably without the glass touching the paper and hang in an area without direct sunlight or high humidity.
When will my order be shipped?
I am excited to send your new piece to your home as you are to get it. Art is meant to be out in the world! I ship orders as quickly as possible, always within one week unless otherwise noted at time of order. Delivery times vary by destination but a tracking number will be provided.
What is your return policy?
Every order is handled with extreme care and every artwork has been created with extreme care. My goal is for you to be happy with your new artwork. Due to the handmade nature of these products and the prohibitive cost of shipping worldwide, I am unable to accept returns. All sales are final.
What if an artwork is damaged or lost during shipping?
I package all artwork carefully and thoroughly and have never had a piece arrive damaged. I also provide tracking numbers from shipping carriers and have never had a piece lost during shipping. However, if either were to happen in the future there is unfortunately nothing I can do, I am not liable for any mishandling, failed delivery or damage that occurs after the item has left my studio. Please be kind when reaching out and remember I have no control over the shipping companies.
